Quinlan Covered Bridge
Chittendon County, Vermont
(WGN 45-04-03)  (WGCB VT-04-03):  (1849; strengthened and repaired c. 1949-50; repaired 1994)  A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 86' over Lewis Creek.  Located:  SE of Charlotte, Vermont on Lewis Creek Road.  Directions:  From north US 7 turn right onto Hollow Road 0.3 mile, then left on Mount Philo Road 0.5 mile to the next intersection and bear right on unmarked Spear Street Extension 2.1 miles to right on Spear Street to the bridge.   It's span was strengthened with two steel beams installed under the existing floor system, probably in 1949 or 1950.  The covered Bridge also has unusual lateral roof bracing.   Named for a farm family that had extensive holdings in the Lewis Creek Valley.  Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides and portals which are square-cut.  It is open under the eaves for ventilation and has two large horizontal window openings opposing along each side, one at each end.  The floor consists of 2' x 6' boards set on edge and it has a black painted steel roof.  Also known as the Lower Covered Bridge (because of its location downstream from the Sequin Bridge (WGN 45-04-02)), the Quinlans Covered Bridge and the Sherman Covered Bridge (after Leonard Sherman who operated a sawmill next to the bridge during the time it was built). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
