Orleans
County, Vermont
(WGN 45-10-03)
(WGCB VT-10-03): (1910) A single-span Town lattice truss
92' 5" over the Missisquoi River. Located: North of Troy, Vermont
on Lehance Road. Directions: From jct. of SR 101 and SR 100
in Troy, Vermont take SR 100 north and after approximately 4 miles, just
after you cross a small stream make the next right turn on Lehance Road
to the bridge. The bridge design is unique among Vermont bridges
in that the lattice has three chords per truss rather than the normal four
and the lattice members are pegged with one treenail rather than two.
Also it is absent the upper intermediate chord. There are three 7"
by 7" timber buttress braces along each side to provide lateral stabilization
to compensate for the lack of knee braces inside the structure. Barn
red vertical tongue and groove boarding covers the sides a little more
than halfway up exposing the truss. The portals are also covered
with barn red vertical tongue and groove boarding. The steep black
painted steel gable roof and wide overhang are also rather distinctive.
Its floor has longitudinal 2" by 6" planks placed on edge. Also known
as the School Covered Bridge, the Schoolhouse Covered Bridge
(named for a nearby school) and the Upper Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 19,
1974. (Oct 2003) |
