Robbin's Nest Covered Bridge
Washington County, Vermont
(WGN 45-12-18)  (WGCB VT-12-18):  (1962 and 1964; restored 1990; 1993) (Private)  A single-span Queenpost truss 56' 5" over the Jail Branch of the Winooski River.   Located: East of Barre, Vermont off US 301.  Directions:  From intersection with jct. US 301 and SR 14 in Barre, Vermont, continue on US 301 2.1 miles to the bridge on your right next to and clearly visible from the highway. The frame is of Douglas fir from California, and siding Vermont lumber. A sign explains that the bridge was built by Robert R. Robbins to access land beyond it. The structures footings and framework were built in 1962 and the siding added in 1964.  During construction, the trusses were built on the ground nearby and lifted into position by a crane.  Steel beans were put under the deck in 1990, along with other restoration work.  Then in 1993 welded steel angle supports were added to cradle the end of each lower chord in the channel with the plate secured to the lip on the concrete base of the abutment and triangular welded steel knee braces were added at the top of the truss's vertical member under the roof beams along with other restoration work. The bridge is a replica of Old Bridge, once located about one hundred yards downstream, that was destroyed in the flood of November 4, 1927.  Vertical boarding covers the sides and portals, open under the eaves for ventilation.  The floor consists of crosswise planking and a brown painted galvanized steel roof.  Both the interior and exterior are stained dark brown.  Also known as the Robbins Nest Covered Bridge.   (Sep 2004)
