A single-span Paddleford truss 120' over the east branch of the Passumpsic
River. Located: Northern edge of Lyndonville, Vermont right next
to Lyndburke Motel. Directions: Off US 5 at SR 114 on the grounds
of the Lyndburke Motel. When first built it was located in a meadow area
on the farm of Benjamin Sanborn, where a road was built to connect Lyndon
Center with the farm on the west side of the Passumpsic River. At
this location the bridge was called the Centre Covered Bridge or
Center
Covered Bridge, after the street it carried, the Lyndonville Covered
Bridge after the community just to the east and the Passumpsic Covered
Bridge after the river it crossed. It was moved to its present
location in 1960, at a cost of $4,000.00. This is one of three surviving
Paddleford truss bridges in Vermont. During a spring flood in 2002,
the abutments of the bridge were damaged. Repairs were made later
in the same year. The structure has a sixteen panel Paddleford truss,
set on poured concrete abutments at the south southwest end and poured
concrete on top of a mortared stone abutment at the north northeast end.
There is a walkway under the roof overhang on the upstream side, the flooring
is covered with longitudinal planking to better accommodate snowmobiles.
Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the exterior on the upstream side
of the vehicle lane and to rail height on the walkway side and open above
to the eaves. Horizontal boarding covers the inner side of the walkway
also to rail height. The downstream side of the vehicle lane is uncovered.
Red painted horizontal lapped siding covers the portals which are trimmed
in white. White painted corrugated steel covers the roof. The
small building inside the bridge once served as a real estate office.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 20, 1974.
