Sanderson Covered Bridge
Rutland County, Vermont 
(WGN  45-11-02 #2) (WGCB VT-11-02 #2):  (c. 1840; rebuilt 2003)  A single-span Town lattice truss 132' over Otter Creek.  Located:  SW of Brandon, Vermont off Pearl Street extension.  Directions:  From the western jct. of US 7 and SR 73  go left on Pearl Street then right where road forks after crossing the railroad tracks.  The bridge is 1.3 miles from US 7.  The structure was closed to traffic in 1987 and construction on the new bridge began on August 19, 2002 with the dismantling of original Sanderson Bridge, and was completed July 31, 2003, at a cost of $830,000.00.  The new bridge contains a few truss lattice members, chord members and roof beams salvaged from the original structure.  It is once again open to motor traffic.  The structure is supported by newly poured concrete on top of new rough cut marble block abutments.  Slightly weathered vertical ship-lapped boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels.  The floor has lengthwise laminated 2" by 6" planks, placed on edge and its moderately pitched steel roof is painted light brown.  Rusted steel guardrails extend along the roadway from each side of the portals.  It was named for the Sanderson family, who has owned the adjacent homestead since 1825.  Also know as the Lower Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1974.  (Sep 2003).
