County, Vermont
(WGN
45-08-01) (WGCB VT-08-01): (c.
1872; repaired 1952; reinforced c. 1970; renovated 2004)
A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 84' 5" over the Brewster
River. Located: South of Jeffersonville, Vermont on Canyon
Road near the Brewster River Gorge State Park. Directions:
From jct. SR 15 and SR 108 in Jeffersonville, Vermont take SR 108 south
0.5 mile to left on Canyon Road 0.1 mile to the bridge. In 1952 there
was a freshet that washed out a 4' section between the road and the bridge
abutment. After temporary repairs failed a new concrete abutment
was poured. These repairs cost $4,800.00. A timber distribution beam
was added under the flooring in the 1970s. In 2004 the bridge was
rebuilt at a cost of $466,057.05. During construction, the distribution
timber added in the 1970's was removed and except for the addition of two
wooden joists tie-bolted under the roadway, it remains as it was when originally
constructed. The structure rests on the original laid up dry rubble
stone abutments. The Burr arches end at the chords. Dark weathered
boarding, except the new hemlock boards on the upstream side, covers the
sides. It is open under the eaves for ventilation and has two high
window openings with slanted window sills, opposing, along each side.
Vertical boarding covers the portals with the lower edge diagonal cut in
the upper corners of the entrance. The floor has lengthwise planking
with wide runners and its new green painted standing-seam steel roof and
the gables project beyond the entrances providing additional weather protection
for the interior. A timber tire-guard extends along each side in
the interior and steel-backed timber guardrails extend along the roadway
from each side of the portals. Also known as the Grist Mill Covered
Bridge (from the old gristmill just downstream on the east-northeast
river bank), the Bryant Covered Bridge, the Grand Canyon Covered
Bridge (from the gorge beneath the bridge), the Brewster River Covered
Bridge (from the river it crosses), the
Canyon Covered Bridge
(from Canyon Road and the gorge beneath the bridge) and the Jeffersonville
Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places on June 13, 1974. (Sep 2004; Sep 2007) |
