Lamoille
County, Vermont
(WGN 45-08-09)
(WGCB VT-08-09): (No actual building date for Pony bridge is
known but VAOT assumes the cover added c. 1919; repaired in 1960;
repaired and new roof c. 2002) A single-span Queenpost truss
47' 8" over the Gihon River. Located: East of East Johnson,
Vermont on Sinclair Road. Directions: From jct. of SR 15 and
SR 100C in Johnson, Vermont, go north on SR 100C 1.5 miles then right on
Sinclair Road approximately 1 mile and the bridge will be on the right.
The structure was originally a Queenpost Pony bridge, without sidewalls
or cover. The roof was added c. 1919. Repaired in 1960 by Wilmer
Locke when the roadway was reinforced with steel beams and the dry stone
abutments were replaced with poured concrete. The bridge was named
for the Leroy Scribner family that once worked the adjacent farm.
More recently, circa 2002, the roof crossbeams inside the portals and at
the center of the structure were replaced as well as some knee braces and
some roof boards. The previous metal roof was replaced by a standing-steel
roof. Gray weathered vertical boarding covers the sides, portals
and weather panels and it is open under the eaves for ventilation.
The floor has crosswise planking with two lengthwise runners and its steel
roof is painted green. Also known as the Mudget Covered Bridge
(derived from the Mudget family who operated a nearby farm), the DeGoosh
Covered Bridge (Ellsworth T. DeGoosh another former owner of the adjacent
farm), the East Johnson Covered Bridge (from the nearby community
of East Johnson) and the Upper Covered Bridge. It was listed
on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 1974. (Oct
2003) |
