Seguin Covered Bridge
Chittendon County, Vermont 
(WGN 45-04-02)  (WGCB VT-04-02):  (1850; repaired  in 1949; 1978 abutments repaired; repaired 1994; new roof c. 2002)  A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 70' 6" over Lewis Creek.  Located:  SE of Charlotte, Vermont on Roscoe Road.  Directions:  From north US 7 turn right onto Hollow Road 0.3 mile, then left on Mount Philo Road 0.5 mile to the next intersection and bear right on unmarked Spear Street Extension 2.1 miles to right on Spear Street going through the Quinlan Covered Bridge (WGN 45-04-03).  Take the first left after the bridge onto Lewis Creek Road.   Follow Lewis Creek Road 1.6 miles to T-intersection with Roscoe Road.  Turn left onto Roscoe Road 1.1 miles to the bridge.  The area where the bridge is located was once the bottom of the Ancient Champlain Sea.  The structure rests on one abutment of stone and mortar capped with concrete and the other poured concrete. It also has unusual lateral roof bracing.  Extensive repairs were made in 1949 which included when two steel beams  installed under the existing floor system.  In October 1978 the north abutment was repaired. Some repair work done in the fall of 1994.  Then circa 2002 some roof boards were replaced and a new standing-seam steel roof replaced the previous metal one.  The structure has a very slight camber.  It has vertical plank siding and portals, the sides are open directly under the eves for ventilation and the floor consists of 2' x 4' boards set on edge.  Also known as the Brown's Covered Bridge, the Upper Covered Bridge (the furthest bridge upstream crossing Lewis Creek), the Prindle Corners Covered Bridge (from the nearby community), the Sherman Covered Bridge (the name of the bridges builder) and the Sequin Covered Bridge (arrived at through usage from Seguin and became commonly accepted, but the origin of Seguin is unknown).  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 6, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
