Slaughter House Covered Bridge
Washington County, Vermont
(WGN 45-12-09)  (WGCB VT-12-09):  (c. 1872; painted 1978; new roof c. 2002)  A single-span Queenpost truss 59' 6" over the Dog River.  Located:  Southern edge of Northfield Falls, Vermont on Bailey Road (Bailey Street).  Directions:  From jct. SR 12 and SR 12A in Northfield Center, Vermont, take SR 12 north 1.3 miles to Northfield, Vermont.  Continue on SR 12 towards Northfield Falls, Vermont making a left onto Bailey Road (Bailey Street) 0.1 mile to the bridge.  The left turn onto Bailey Road (Bailey Street) can be tricky since the road is located between two houses and looks somewhat like a driveway between two mailboxes.  A white sign indicating a 16,000 pound weight limit is more visible than the street sign for Bailey Street.  Bailey Street dead-ends on the other side of the bridge.  The structure rests on abutments of non mortared stone blocks and slabs.  In 1978 it was painted barn red inside and out.  Circa 2002 some roof boards were replaced and a standing-seam steel roof was installed.  It is unique in Northfield, Vermont in that it alone has rounded portals.  Vertical boarding covers the sides and weather panels, open above the eaves for ventilation.  There is one parallel wood-framed opening along each side.  The portals are covered with vertical boards with battens with the lower edge oval cut over the entrances and S-cut under the eaves.  The floor consists of transverse planks with two lengthwise wheel treads and the roof is painted silver.  Also known as the Slaughter Covered Bridge or the Slaughterhouse Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
