Spade Farm Covered Bridge
Addison County, Vermont
(WGN 45-01-02)  (WGCB VT-01-02):  (c. 1850 [1824 (see below)]; roof repaired and modified 1999; additional repairs prior to 2003) (Private)  A single-span Town lattice truss 85' over a pond.  Located:  North of Ferrisburg, Vermont on private land (Spade Farm).  Directions:  About 4 miles north of jct. of SR 22A near Vergennes, Vermont on US 7 past Ferrisburg, Vermont on on west (left) side of the road beside of the Old Farm Restaurant.  Easy to spot given it is only about 100' from US 7.  The bridge was moved from North Ferrisburg, Vermont where it crossed Lewis Creek to its present location in 1958.  A sign on the bridge indicates it was built 1824 however, Richard Sanders Allen says 1850's more likely its date of construction.  Around 1999 the upstream side of the roof had the boards replaced and cedar shingles installed replacing the old rusted sheet metal, which still covers the downstream side.  Spade Farm Bridge is the oldest covered bridge remaining in Vermont and also in all New England.  Dark weathered vertical boarding covers the sides to the eaves, two large horizontal window openings on the upstream side and only one centered on the downstream side, and covers the portals.  It has multiple width planking laid lengthwise comprised the floor covering.  Considerable repairs have been made to the bridge prior to April 2003 which included included roof boards, shakes, and rafters replaced on the east side of the bridge.  Also known as the  Hollow Covered Bridge and the Old Covered Bridge Farm Covered Bridge.   When we visited, the bridge contained old furniture and other miscellaneous items for sale.  (Sep 2004)
