County, Vermont
(WGN
45-12-11) (WGCB VT-12-11): (c.
1872; strengthened 1966; repaired and painted 1978; new roof
c.
2002) A single-span Queenpost truss 51' 5" over Cox Brook. At the
village of Northfield Falls, Vermont off SR 12 on Cox Brook Road.
Directions: In Northfield Falls, Vermont go west off SR 12 onto Cox
Brook Road at the main intersection 0.1 mile through the Station Covered
Bridge (WGN 45-12-08) 0.1 mile then through
the Second Covered Bridge [WGN 45-12-10]
0.2 mile to the bridge. The upper chord of the Queenpost truss is
only half the height of the sides and this might ordinarily suggest the
span was once open and the roof added later. However, the Queenposts
themselves are full height. Because the bridge does not cross Cox
Brook squarely, the whole structure is skewed. Four steel beams were placed
beneath the floor members in 1966 to provide additional deck support. It
is also likely that, at the same time, the dry stone abutments were replaced
with poured concrete. In 1978 its siding was repaired and it was
painted barn red on the exterior and the interior. Circa 2002 a few
roof boards and a new standing-seam steel roof was installed. Vertical
boarding covers the sides and weather panels,
open above the eaves for ventilation. There are long horizontal wood-framed
openings with a shutter flaring out above it on each side. The portals
are covered with vertical boards with battens and its flooring consists
of lengthwise 2" x 8" boards set on edge and a silver painted roof.
One of three bridges (Station Covered Bridge [WGN
45-12-08], Second Covered Bridge [WGN
45-12-10] and Third Covered Bridge [WGN
45-12-11]) within 0.4 mile of each other on Cox Brook Road.
All three bridges are painted barn red. Also known as the Upper
Cox Brook Covered Bridge and the Upper Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1,
1974. (Sep 2004) |
