Twin Covered Bridge
Rutland County, Vermont
(WGN  45-11-10) (WGCB VT-11-10):  (1850)  A single-span Town lattice truss 60' on dry land.  Located:  North of Rutland, Vermont on private land off East Pittsford Road.  Directions:  Take US 7 north from jct. with US 4 in Rutland, Vermont to where US 7 swings left and East Pittsford Road goes strait (look for a water tower shaped like a rocket ship on the right).  Take East Pittsford Road 0.8 mile and look for a shed on the right side of the road.  That shed is the Twin Covered Bridge.  It formerly spanned East Creek and was one of two bridges less than 15 feet apart (after the first bridge was built, a flood cut a new channel and the second bridge was built to span it).  When the East Pittsford Dam broke in 1947, one was destroyed, and this one was "salvaged."  It was moved from its original location in 1947 and is currently boarded up at both ends being used as a storage shed by the Town Highway Department. There are plans to provide the bridge a "new life." The 153 year old structure is to be restored and enjoyed again as part of a recreational bicycle path. The location proposed is Northwood Park in the Town of Rutland, Vermont.  A $10,000 grant has been secured, and there is another $8,000 local money available. The total anticipated cost and date of completion of the project is not known. Dark weathered double layered vertical boarding covers the sides and single layered vertical boarding covers the portals.  Both entrances are closed up with plywood with the east south east entrance in the form of large swinging doors.  Longitudinal planking forms the floor and the roof is covered with old rusted steel.  Also known as the Rutland Twin Covered Bridge.  (Sep 2003)
