Union Village Covered Bridge
Orange County, Vermont
(WGN 45-09-05)  (WGCB VT-09-05):  (1867; renovated c. 1970; restored 2002)  A single-span multiple Kingpost with Kingpost arch truss 111' over the Ompompanoosuc River.   Located:  At Union Village, Vermont on Academy Road.  Directions:   From jct. US 5 and SR 132, take SR 132 northwest 2.4 miles to a fork.  Take the right fork, Academy Road, 0.3 mile to bridge on the right.  The timber deck was replaced and distribution beams and steel knee braces were added in the 1970's.  It still has some of its original dry stone abutment work (though capped with concrete in the 1970s) on the west side.  Restoration began in April 2002 and has been completed at a cost of $609,213.  During the restoration,  they salvaged the trusses, the chords and some roof timbers as well as adding glue-laminated stringers beneath the flooring.  Unpainted vertical boarding covers the sides, portals and weather panels.  There are three large horizontal window openings covered with heavy wire-mesh grills opposing along each side.  The floor has longitudinal planks, placed on edge, and its standing-seam copper roof and gables project beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection for the interior.  It is the longest multiple Kingpost span in the state. Also known as the Clogston Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1974.  (Sep 2004)
