repaired 1995; restored 2000) A single-span Queenpost truss 54' 9"
over the Mad River. Located: At the village of Warren, Vermont
on Covered Bridge Road. Directions: Approaching Warren, Vermont
from the south on SR 100, look for a sign with an arrow, on you right,
indicating Warren Village just before a concrete-and-steel bridge.
Turn onto Main Street Warren, Vermont and go 0.4 mile to the bridge on
your left on Covered Bridge Road. The bridge has a unique asymmetrical
design with a vertical east portal, but upper side walls that project differently
at the west portal. In the fall of 1995, the roadway was strengthened
with timber cross-braces and stringers and the roof was re shingled.
In the fall of 1998, the bridge was closed to traffic pending a major restoration.
Restored in 2000, at a cost of $122,500.00. Restoration work consisted
of replacing four truss members, both lower chords, the floor planking,
most of the upstream siding and some of the downstream siding, interior
siding. Repairing and/or replacing many floor timbers and adding
bedding timbers beneath the chords, wheel treads and repairing the end
posts. The structure was reopened to traffic and dedicated on October 2,
2000. Dark weathered, vertical double layered boarding covers
the sides, portals and weather panels. There are parallel
horizontal wood-framed openings on each side. The floor has crosswise
planking and lengthwise runners and its gray weathered cedar shake roof
and gables project beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection
for the interior. Also known as the Lincoln Gap Covered Bridge
and the Village Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on August 7, 1974. (Sep 2004) |
