Carrollton Covered Bridge
Barbour County, West Virginia
(WGN 48-01-02)  (WGCB WV-01-02)  (1856; rehabilitated 1962)  A three-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 156'  5" over the Buckhannon River.  Located:  Located in Carrollton, West Virginia on Carrollton Road.  Directions:  From Philippi, West Virginia at the junction of US 119 and US 250, go south 6.0 miles on US 119 to left on CR 36 (Carrollton Road),  0.7 mile to the bridge, in Carrollton, West Virginia.  Was originally built at a cost of $4,819.  The pre Civil War bridge carried traffic of the day along the Middle Fork Turnpike across the Buckhannon River, in a single span.  In 1962,  due to heavy vehicular traffic  the bridge was modified, and a new concrete slab bridge, supported by steel I-beams on two concrete piers and the original abutments, was constructed.  The old wooden truss cover was then anchored upon this new bridge, thus preserving the historic bridge for many more years to come.  The modifications cost $50,000.  The bridge has a fourteen-panel single-post, multiple Kingpost truss, sandwiched between Burr arches; only one other multiple Kingpost truss with Burr arch remaining in West Virginia.  Owned by the West Virginia Department of Transportation, is the second longest authentic covered bridge in West Virginia. One of the only two many covered bridges that once spanned the creeks and rivers of Barbour County still standing.  Also known as the Buckhannon River Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic places on June 4, 1981, simultaneously with ten other historic covered bridges in West Virginia.    (Jun 2005)
