Monogalia
County, West Virginia
(WGN
48-31-03) (WGCB WV-31-03) (1889; modified
c.
1988; rehabilitated 1984) A single-span Kingpost truss 40' 3" over
Dents Run. Located: West of Laurel Point, West Virginia on
CR 43-6. Directions: From Laurel Point, West Virginia, go west
on US 19 to Sugar Grove Road (CR 43), on the right; go 0.7 mile to CR 43-6,
a gravel road on the left; follow 0.3 mile to the bridge. The bridge was built at a cost of $448. The single-post Kingpost truss is modified
by the addition of timber supports, from part way up the vertical tension
member to under the center of each diagonal brace and the bridge is set
on dry, large sandstone-block abutments with wing walls. Six steel
I-beam stringers were added, sometime prior to 1988 to strengthen the bridge.
There are two small signs mounted on the right downstream gable; one with
"DENTS RUN/COVERED BRIDGE" and the other with "BUILT 1889." It was bypassed,
sometime in the 1980s, when a low, unobtrusive concrete bridge was
built a few feet downstream from the covered bridge. Open to pedestrian
traffic only. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1984. Also known
as the Laurel Point Covered Bridge. It was simultaneously
listed with ten other historic covered bridges in West Virginia on the
National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1981. (Jun 2005) |
