County, West Virginia
(WGN
48-17-03) (WGCB WV-17-03) (1891; rehabilitated 2002)
A Single-span multiple Kingpost truss 62' over Tenmile Creek. Located:
North of Maken, West Virginia on CR 5-29. Directions: From
Clarksburg, West Virginia go west on US 50 through Maken, West Virginia
to Marshville Road (CR 5), on the right; follow 1.5 mile to the bridge,
on the left, at CR 5-29. Built at a cost of $937.46. It derived
its name from the nearby Fletcher Family. Since its construction
in 1891, the tin roof has been replaced with asphalt roofing paper; and
until rehabilitated in 2002, the bridge had been unaltered and in
continuous use. It is supported by a six-panel multiple Kingpost
truss, set on dry, large sandstone-block abutments. The bridge is
owned by the state. At one time, Harrison County had in excess
of sixty Covered Bridges, but today, only two remain. Also known
as the Tenmile Creek Covered Bridge. It was listed together
with ten other historic covered bridges in West Virginia, on the National
Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1981. (Jun 2005) |
