Herns Mill Covered Bridge
Greenbriar County, West Virginia 
(WGN 48-13-01) (WGCB WV-13-01)(c. 1884, rehabilitated 2000)  A single-span Queenpost truss 58' 3" over Milligans Creek.  Located:  West of Lewisburg, West Virginia:  Directions:  From I 64 take Exit 169, US 219 south to right on US 60 west (in Lewisburg, West Virginia).  Take US 60 approximately 3.4 miles to left on CR 40 (Bungers Mill Road) for 1.0 mile to the bridge.  The original cost of the bridge was approximately $800.00 and provided access to the S.S. Herns Mill and homesteaders on the far side of Milligans Creek.  The bridge underwent major renovation in 2000, that added steel I-beam stringers, concrete caps on the abutments to hold the I-beams, stone guard walls, new portal timbers, a new roof and new siding.   At 13' 2" wide it is the narrowest authentic historic covered bridge in West Virginia.  There is a plaque on the bridge stating:  "S313-40-13.41 HERNS MILL BRIDGE NO. 4290 BUILT CIRCA 1884 REHABILITATED 2000."  Still carrying motor traffic, it is one of two covered bridges remaining in Greenbrier County.  It is also owned by the state.   It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1981.  (Nov 2003, Mar 2004)
