County, West Virginia
(WGN
48-32-02) (WGCB WV-32-02): (c. 1898; rehabilitated
1965 and 2000) A single-span Queenpost/Long combination truss 49'
9" over Indian Creek. Located: South of Salt Sulphur Springs,
West Virginia on bypassed section of US 219. Directions: From
I 64 take Exit 169, US 219 south to Union, West Virginia. At the
four-way stop in Union, West Virginia on US 219, go south 4.6 miles on
US 219 to the bridge, on the right. Built by Ray and Oscar Weikel
when they were 16 and 18 years of age at a cost of approximately $400.00.
The bridge was rehabilitated in 1965 and again in 2000. It is currently
owned by the state and was rehabilitated in 2002. The bridge recently
(2003) survived a flood but the access ramp on the north side was badly
eroded and will require repair. On December 3, 2003 there was still
debris and gravel inside the bridge, but structurally it remains sound.
One of two remaining covered bridges in Monroe County and one of the most
photographed covered bridges in West Virginia. It is open to pedestrian
traffic only. It has a bypassed section of US 219 passing through
it, with the east end open and a rock outcrop at the west end. Also known as the Salt Sulphur Springs Covered Bridge. It
was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 1, 1975.
