rehabilitated 2002) A single-span Howe with Burr arch truss 114'
1" over a small pond. Located: In Milton, West Virginia
at the Pumpkin Festival Park, One Pumpkin Way. Directions:
From Milton, West Virginia at I-64, exit 28, US 60, go south on Mason Road
(CR 13) 0.5 mile on US 60; go right 0.5 mile to the traffic light at Fairgrounds
Road, on the left; go 0.5 mile, bearing left on James River Turnpike; go
0.2 mile to the bridge visible on the left, in Milton Pumpkin Festival
Park, at One Pumpkin Way. Original cost of the bridge is unknown.
The bridge was disassembled in February 1998 and moved into storage at
its new site, Milton Pumpkin Festival Park, less than one mile away, until
bids could be solicited and a contract let for its reconstruction.
Reconstruction began in 2001 and completed in 2002, utilizing new materials
except for the truss and abutment sandstone blocks, which were salvaged
from the original bridge and site. The present bridge is supported
by a ten-panel Howe truss that had a four-ply laminated Burr Arch added,
during 1971 repairs. The single-span bridge now spans a pond, the larger
part with a small island on the northeast side. Restricted to foot
traffic, an asphalt-paved walkway leads to the southeast portal and extends
a short distance from the northwest portal. The bridge is fully exposed,
with scattered mature trees nearby. Also known as the Sink's Mill Covered
Bridge, after a nearby mill, as well as the Milton Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, under the name
Mud
River Bridge, on June 10, 1975. (Jun 2005)er historic covered
