Simpson Creek Covered Bridge
Harrison County, West Virginia
(WGN 48-17-12)  (WGCB WV-17-12)  (1881; moved 1899; repaired 1984; rehabilitated 2002)  A single-span multiple Kingpost truss 79' 5" over Simpson Creek.  Located near Bridgeport, West Virginia on old CR 24-2 (Despard-Summit Park Road).  Directions:  From Clarksburg, West Virginia, go east on US 50 to I-79; go north to exit 121, at CR 24 (Medowbrook Road); go left on CR 24, under the overpass, about 0.3 mile to the first left, CR 24-2 (Despard-Summit Park Road).  The bridge is on the right.  Was originally built at a cost of $1,483 and located  one-half mile upstream from the present site.  It survived the Great Flood of 1888, but was washed off its abutments in 1899.  Salvaged, the bridge was rebuilt at the new location on new abutments in 1899.   The structure is supported by a nine-panel multiple Kingpost truss, which has a single, open center panel, and rests on dry or un mortared, large sandstone block abutments.   It was damaged in 1984 when a tree fell across the roof. Closed to motor traffic sometime prior to 1990 and subsequently bypassed when a new concrete bridge was built.    Rehabilitation work was completed in 2002.  Owned by the state of West Virginia.  Also known as the Holland Covered Bridge, the Hollen Mill Covered Bridge, the Law Farm Covered Bridge and the W. T. Law Covered Bridge.  It was among the ten historic covered bridges in West Virginia listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1981.  (Jun 2005)
